CIUDAD ANIMAL

Ciudad Animal is a shelter for dogs in Pedro Muñoz. Pedro Muñoz is a municipality in the Spanish province Ciudad Real and is located in the region Castilia/ La Mancha. Pedro Muñoz counts approximately 8,600 inhabitants.

Loli Cantero is the head of the organization.

 

This is her story:

 

" I have already started years ago with taking dogs from the streets and bringing them to my house. I have prepared them for a life in a family and I searched for families to adopt and love them. But it was very difficult because I was alone and no member of an organization. Under these circumstances it is very difficult to work with a good result. Here in Pedro Muñoz there was a perrera municipal and we found out that illegal things happened there, the dogs were killed using a product that caused pain and suffering before their death, also there was absolutely no control by a veterinary.
This was the reason to report the municipality to the police. With a small group of people we founded an Asociacion Protectora, an organization for animal well-being and a shelter.

 

  

 

After almost two years of negotiations with the municipality Council, we obtained the small facilities we have now, although, thanks to the contributions of the association “Amour de Galgos” and those of Nuria Blanco “Amigos de los Galgos” and also contributions of other people, we were able to extend those facilities.
The property where the shelter has been established has a surface of 2,597 m2. The cultivated surface is approximately 278,75 m2.

 

We started with very few dogs, but each year there were more and especially more Galgos. For the work in the shelter there is no timetable, actually I am busy 24 hours a day for the dogs because many of them are in a bad condition when they arrive and they need much attention. We have an average of 140 dogs in the shelter per year. But all the work is compensated when you enter in the morning (which always is accompanied by fear that something terrible such as a fight could have happened) and the dogs welcome you with the gladness and love which only they are able to give. And when they are adopted by a nice family who love them, pay attention to them and give them a good life which they never had before, that is when I feel paid for all the work.  

 

For the veterinary costs we have built up a debt which lies above the 20,000 euro.
Feeding is one of my other preoccupations because when we have no contributions and have to buy dog food, we can only buy a very cheap type. Then the costs for the veterinary frequently rise because it can cause problems like diarrhea or vomiting.
Other important costs are those for medicines, analyses, microchips and everything that is necessary to make the situation for our dogs in the shelter as comfortable as possible. Our income is very low, we have few partners and thanks to contributions of people such as you we are able to continue. The situation is getting worse because more dogs are abandoned and less dogs are adopted. Thanks to the great support of Nuria Blanco of “Amigos de los Galgos” and Dominique Dely van “Amour de Galgos” and their generous contributions (such as blankets, medication, food, heating appliances, huts for our galgos, money etc.) which their organizations receive and which they bring to our shelter in Pedro Muñoz, we can continue our work and save these poor innocent beings from death “
